Home composting units

by Residents Association of Panampally Nagar in Cochin.

In 2001, Residents Association of Panampally Nagar in Cochin decided to setup home composting units. Presently, about 300 households are composting their waste at back yard using a cost effective system consisting of a concrete ring of 90 cm diameter and 45 cm high with perforations. The ring is placed on a level ground with some moist soil or cow dung slurry in the bottom. A partition is provided to separate in to two halves. Se gregated domestic organic waste is spread daily in one half and occasionally water is sprinkled. When this ring gets filled, the other ring is used. A cover is given to protect the same from rodents, crows, dogs etc. The contents of first half can be taken out after 50 days. The end product is mostly used in the kitchen garden or for the plants they grow.
