Action Points, initiatives

It is understood that a number of initiatives in different areas have to be taken to achieve the envisaged objectives. These initiatives are conceived in areas of management actions, promotional requirements, awareness and training programmes and enforcement measures. A list of 28 initiatives is given hereunder: 

A. Management initiatives

  • Developing model system for Municipal solid waste management using appropriate technology

  • Implement bio-medical waste management system 

  • In-house solid waste management system for institutions

  • Environmental upkeep of land fill sites 

  • Popularising household waste management systems 

  • Night sweeping practice in all urban areas

 B. Promotional initiatives

  • Waste free tourism locations

  • Micro enterprise through cluster house approach 

  • Waste disposal in slaughterhouses through incentive mechanisms

  • Expanding Clean Kerala Business of Kudumbashree

  • Entrepreneurship in production and marketing of manure and biogas

  • Replication of best practices and success models

  • Holistic waste management through incentive mechanism 

  • Enlisting, training and upgrading Rag pickers

  • R&D studies for special problems and problem areas

  • Bringing in appropriate & cost effective technologies

 C. Awareness, IEC & Capacitation initiatives

  • Intensive campaign through print and electronic media

  • Campaign through ward/grama sabhas, neighbourhood groups, residential associations, NGOs

  • Introducing relevant topics in school curriculum

  • Healthy and hygienic hospital environment

  • Capacitating health workers

  • Orientation, inspiration & motivation of sanitary workers

  • Mass campaign against misuse of plastics

  • Action research through school eco-clubs

D. Enforcement initiatives

  • Focus on shops and industrial establishments 

  • Permit fee, User fee and incentive systems for waste management in public areas- maidans, main roads, bus stands, railway stations etc

  • Building permit to have approved plan for disposal of construction and demolition wastes

  • Regulation for management of institutional waste change-hotels, community halls, slaughter houses etc.
